In this ethnographic study of traditional sculpture from Santa Cruz Island, near the Solomon Islands in the southwest Pacific the late anthropologist William H. Davenport presents a distinctive genre of figure sculpture produced for and used in traditional religious rituals and ceremonies. The body of the book discusses the history of Santa Cruz Island society since the first Europeans came to the area in 1595, the cultural meanings of its most conspicuous features, and descriptions of the main components of worship, the rituals. The book includes discoveries about the making and use of the figurines, as well as the iconography of the pieces. The latter information is derived from general ethnographic data collected in the course of field research between 1958 and 1976 on Santa Cruz...

Troll down: pink-haired sculpture in Ann Arbor's Nichols Arboretum smashed to ... - MLive.com

A pink-haired troll sculpture erected in Ann Arbor's Nichols Arboretum on Sunday has been smashed to pieces, and the theory is vandals knocked it down. Students from art professor Osman Khan's contemporary sculpture class at the University of Michigan's Stamps School of Art & Design lugged the enormous troll doll parts from the Stamps sculpture studio to the Arb on Sunday. The students collaboratively fabricated the statue by hand in recent weeks and fittingly placed it in the Arb's "Troll Knoll" as a temporary art display. As of Tuesday afternoon, the troll was still standing, and apparently had proven pretty popular, as many people were posting pictures of it on social media. But by Wednesday, photos posted on social media showed the statute, officially titled "Untitled (with Pink Hair)," had been knocked down, its body severed, its pink hair pieces broken and scattered about, and an arm and a leg missing. On Wednesday afternoon, an Arb caretaker hauled away the remains of the sculpture to be placed in storage. "It's frustrating," said Arb director Bob Grese, who suspects someone pushed the statue over, though he acknowledges it could have been the wind. "I was there immediately after it went up on Sunday and people were flocking to it, taking selfies of themselves with the sculpture, having a lot of fun with it being there, so it's disappointing that others aren't able to enjoy it," Grese said. Khan, whose students made the sculpture, said he's sure it was vandals since an arm and leg are missing. He said there's no way the wind could have blown them away. "The students all kind of knew that would potentially happen," he said of the artwork being vandalized. Khan said the original plan was to have the sculpture on display at the Arb and then have it moved to the Matthaei Botanical Gardens to be displayed there. He said he's not sure if there will be any attempts to restore it. He said he'll leave that up to his students to decide, though he notes they spent nearly two months working on it already and they have other projects to do. The students chose a... On its Facebook page earlier this week, the Stamps school described the experience of standing next to the troll as "kind of like standing in the Redwoods. Except only one of the trees is really, really big. And that really, really big tree is a troll. It's believed the troll, counting its hair, stood somewhere around 12 to 14 feet tall. Looking on the bright side, Khan said on Wednesday, "I think the students learned a lot and ultimately that's the main thing.
