BASE jumper Erik Roner dies in skydiving accident - SFGate

In this June 1, 2011, file photo provided by Jeff Bottari, Erik Roner, of Nitro Circus, talks to the media after a base jump off the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The extreme sports and MTV star skydiving for the opening ceremony of a golf event in Northern California died when he struck a tree Monday, Sept. 28, 2015, authorities said. Erik Roner , a well-known member of the action sports community and pioneer of ski BASE jumping, died Monday morning after he hit a tree during a skydiving performance near the Squaw Valley ski resort in Placer County, officials said. Roner, a 39-year-old Tahoe City resident, was part of a group conducting an aerial performance over a nonprofit fundraising event hosted by the Squaw Valley Institute , the Placer County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. While attempting to land, Roner hit a tree and became entangled in branches high above the ground, the sheriff’s office said. Roner was raised in Northern California and began skiing at an early age, following in the footsteps, or ski-tracks, of his mother, an avid skier from Utah. He went to Brigham Young University in Utah to pursue soccer, but quickly became enamored with the mountains there and, after graduating with a degree in graphic design, dedicated his life full-time to skiing, according to the biography on his... He grew particularly fond of, and good at, ski BASE jumping, in which skiers throw themselves off of impossibly large cliffs and descend using parachutes. In 2005, motocross superstar Travis Pastrana asked Roner to consult with his Nitro Circus crew, a group of extreme sports athletes across various disciplines, who were attempting to BASE jump dirt bikes into the Grand Canyon. Roner got along so well with the group that he was invited to join the crew, with which he spent two years filming a show for MTV and traveling for a world tour of Nitro Circus stadium shows. Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows released a statement noting how well-liked Roner was in the Tahoe-area community and offering condolences to his family. “Erik was an incredibly inspiring person, not only as an athlete but as a friend and family man, the statement said. “We will sincerely miss Erik’s presence within this community, and our deepest sympathies are with his family at this time. He was a well-known fan of Hunter S. Thompson and used a quote from the gonzo journalist to close out his online bio. “Faster, faster, faster until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death,” the quote reads.

Soviet VTOL Yakovlev Aircraft Yak-38. 1976.
Digitally composed image The original craft is exposed in Technical Museum of Vedim Zadorozhny, Moscow. The Yakovlev Yak-38 (Russian: Як-38, NATO reporting name: Forger) was Soviet Naval Aviation's first and only operational VTOL strike fighter aircraft. Design and development The first drawings showed a supersonic aircraft strongly resembling by the Hawker P.1154 in study in the United Kingdom but with two R27-300 engines. Supersonic performances would have implied many difficulties of development, and it was decided to initially develop a relatively simple aircraft limited to Mach 0.95. Although the Yak-38 and Yak-38M were developed from the land-based Yakovlev Yak-36, the aircraft had almost nothing in common. The Prototype VM-01 was finished on April 14, 1970. Though outwardly similar to the British Harrier Jump Jet, it followed a completely different configuration. Apart from having a vectorable engine in the rear used for...

Cpl. Jonathon Schannep and Sgt. Daniel Kahn, force reconnaissance Marines with 4th Force Reconnaissance Company, scout a beachfront during hydrographic reconnaissance training at Marine Corps Training Area Bellows in Waimanalo, Hawaii, Jan. 13. The training was part of a weeklong jump and dive training package that brought the unit, headquartered in Alameda, Calif., together with their Hawaii-based counterparts — 4th Force's 4th Platoon. Following a real-life mission, the data they collect — such as the size and frequency of wave crests, sediment type and slope of the beach — allows unit commanders to determine what type of landing and vehicles the beach's composite supports, said Petty Officer 2nd Class Mike Weissman, a hospital corpsman with 2nd Platoon, 4th Force.
